"Metcalfe has perform form here. Notice the coordination of arms and legs
and particularly the action of his left arm which was not evident in the
pictures of him at the start. Note Wykoff's pull on his right foot.
Parsons is carrying his rear foot too high,
thereby wasting time and energy."

"Notice the bound of Metcalfe and his good
arm action. Wykoff's opposite leg is more into the stride than is
Parsons! This is probably explained by the high kick-up of Parsons in the
preceding picture."

"Parsons kicks up his follow leg farther than
either Metcalfe or Wykoff, which apparently causes a shorter stride.
On the other hand both Metcalfe and Wykoff eliminate this kick-up by getting
higher knee action in front. The right angle position of Wykoff's left leg
should be noticed carefully by the novice, as under flexing of the knees wastes
valuable split seconds each stride and this loss of time must be multiplied by
the number of strides in the race to determine the total amount of time lost.
This could mean anything from 1/10 of a second to a full 2 seconds."
