GLENDALE
GREETS
OLYMPIC ATHLETES
Frank Wykoff and Delos Thurber were
showered with community praise not only as Olympic games
athletic heroes but also as exemplary types of American manhood
as they were formally welcomed to Glendale from their Berlin
trip yesterday afternoon and last night.
An automobile parade through the
downtown district, a speaking program from a stand in the 100
block of North Brand and a banquet featured the civic reception
arranged in their honor under joint sponsorship of the Glendale
Junior Chamber of Commerce and 20-30 Club.
WYKOFF THANKS FRIENDS
"Friends," Wykoff said,
"the trip was wonderful but it feels
great to be home again." And then visibly
touched, added:
"I have Frederick
Graham and you to thank for the trip. It was you who sent
me to New York for the Olympic finals in which I qualified for
the team.
"I remembered the
confidence and faith you placed in me as I competed in the
finals and I assure you that this gave me the extra strength
that made it possible to make the team."
SPEAKS AT BANQUET
At the banquet last night at Oakmont
club, Wykoff recalled that after the Olympic tryouts in Los
Angeles those in charge told winning athletes that there were no
available funds to send them to the New York finals.
"But Graham,
through the columns of the News-Press," he said,
"came to my rescue and with the help of
residents and organizations it was made possible for me to go to
New York."
GAMES PURPOSE TOLD
Both Wykoff and Thurber were introduced
to the gathering by Graham, who declared that the purpose of the
Olympic games is to bring the youth of different nations into
competition and by so doing temper the feelings between
countries with an understanding of each others peoples and
problems.
Headed by Fred Cady, Olympic team
swimming coach, numerous other notables including Dorothy
Poynton Hill, games swimming star, addressed the banquet
gathering.
COACHES ON PROGRAM
Among other speakers were Mayor Olson,
Normal C. Hayhurst, who coached Wykoff at Glendale High School,
and Russ Cripe, who coached Thurber at the same school.
Madison H. Fowler, president of the
junior chamber, presided at the banquet, and Merle Staub,
president of the 20-30 club, officiated at the speaking
ceremonies held in the afternoon
